Caroline, I understand that Netanyahu, whom I have always admired as a statesman and champion for Israel, has a lot on his plate, and that he is dealing with the narcissist-in-chief, who seems everyday to be more of an Islamic sympathizer at a bare minimum and not an independent broker for peace. However, he seems too eager to take on the role of a politician, which I do not believe either he, nor the state of Israel, can afford that luxury, not only when dealing with the likes of Hamas, but also with the likes of Obama, who profoundly does not have the interests of Israel at heart.
It makes no sense either to freeze all settlement expansion or to release 450 terrorists without obtaining sufficient concessions from the Arabs as well. One could say that the life of one Israeli soldier is worth 450 terrorists, but as you say it is not that simple, as the released terrorists will undoubtedly kill other Israelis.
Netanyahu needs to hunker down and let Obama know that Israel is not about to go along with his recommended approach. Israel may have to enlist the support of the American people to put pressure on Obama to be more even handed. athat is a viable alternative, as there are many conservative Americans who stand solidly behind Israel.
